Step-by-Step Squarespace Tutorial

Step 1 – Select your template.

In this tutorial, we’ll create a portfolio website for a (fictional) graphic artist called Elli to market and showcase her talents.

First, look through the various available templates, which you can download here. There are more than 100 templates available, and you can also browse by categories (Portfolio blog, Photography, etc.). Click on a template, and you’ll be presented with two options: 1.) Create your site by using the template, or 2.) Check out the template.

Since it’s impossible to switch templates when using the most recent version of Squarespace, I’d suggest selecting another option before reviewing the template thoroughly before choosing the one you like best.

I’d suggest choosing an aesthetic template in accordance with the website you’re looking to build for your site – e.g., similar colors, fonts, and images. Layouts are simple to alter using Squarespace However, changing style may require a little more effort.

After settling on the template, you want to use, click the ‘Start With’ option. To create Elli’s site, we’ll choose the template ‘Novo’ under “Portfolios” since it shares the same design and structure as the one we’re looking to highlight.

Step -2 – Sign up for a Squarespace account (for no cost! )

On the next page, you will ask to sign up to Squarespace by using your Google, Apple or email account.

There’s no need for a credit card; You can test Squarespace out for no cost for up to fourteen days (giving you ample time to consider whether it’s the right choice for your needs).

While you can design your site free of charge during the 14-day trial, you’ll need to upgrade the plans offered by Squarespace to launch your website. We’ll discuss that in the final section of this guide.

After submitting your personal information, you’ll be asked what you’d like to call your website. You can input the title here, or do not bother and return to it in the future.

There will also be short animation showing you how to modify your website, including editing, designing and creating pages. These are available for you to view or can watch or not.

Step 3. Get familiar with Squarespace

Then, you’ll be directed to the next screen, from where you’ll have the ability to make modifications to your website. Below is a short summary of the different sections of the screen:

1. The first part is called The Website Preview. It allows you to preview the style and content of every website’s page, including images, text sections, and so on. The ‘Edit’ button at the top left of the screen will direct you to the Editor, meaning you’ll have to make the majority of your website’s modifications. Now you’re looking at your homepage. You can go to different pages by clicking the hyperlinks within this view (just like you would when browsing the live version of your site).

2. While the top section is in charge of changes to the page, You can imagine the home menu to the left as a place to take care of the larger overall picture. It comprises the design of your website, pages, navigation menus, SEO, and analytics. It’s also where you can manage other features (online store blog, member pages, member pages, etc.). You can also browse the pages of your website using the option ‘Pages’ within this menu.

3. The Assistant offers a helpful introduction video for Squarespace (which I would recommend taking a look at) and also explains the process of editing your website. Because we’ll cover these steps in this video, You can close the window by pressing the “X” button on the right side of the screen (after watching the instructional video).

Click around and look through these various sections to gain an understanding of how everything is working.

The most essential things to bear in mind concerning Squarespace’s Editor are:

  • Unfortunately, there’s no autosave feature. You must manually save any changes you make after having made the changes. This is done by hovering over the word ‘Done’ at the top left and selecting the Save option.
  • Additionally, there’s no button to undo (although there is a way to reverse changes in text using specific keystrokes, e.g., CTRL/CMD + Z). You can select ‘Discard Changes’ (also accessed by hovering over ‘Done’ on the upper left); however, this will reverse all modifications made since the most recent save (with no possibility of redoing). This is the reason why it’s essential to keep your work regularly.

Step 4 Edit the header on your homepage

We can begin to modify our homepage by clicking the Edit button on the left-hand side of your Preview of Site (section 1, section).

We’ll first focus on modifying the website’s content (text images, text, etc.). The design will be changed future.

It’s clear that the Squarespace platform has automatically added the name of your website that you entered earlier in the heading of your site. If you wish to alter this, simply hover your mouse over the header and click the Edit header button.

A new window will open. Select the ‘Site Title & Logo’ option. Here, you’ll be able to modify the title of your website and logo or upload your logo. Squarespace provides the option of a no-cost logo creator, and you can create your logo.

When you’re done, click Back in this same tab. You can also edit the other elements of your header, like those included within the primary navigation (your menu for your site, which is visible at the top of this page). For instance, if you select ‘Elements,’ you’ll have the option of choosing the elements you wish to show in your main navigation (e.g., social hyperlinks, call-to-action buttons such as shopping carts, or accounts login) by adjusting either ‘on’ or ‘off.’

In Elli’s situation, we’ll take out Instagram and Vimeo links. Vimeo as well as Instagram hyperlinks. To edit them, click the option to edit social links, then select one of the links you wish to delete. A brand new window will pop up Click ‘delete’.

We’d like Elli to maintain the Dribble link, but we want to update it with the link to Elli’s Dribble portfolio. Simply select the Dribble option and then change the URL within the popup. Save the changes when you are done.

Any changes to the header should be applied to the title displayed across the entire site, not only the homepage. Thus, you’ll only get one variant of your header displayed on your website. Also, the footer will be automatically updated by adding the social media links you’ve modified in your title.

Step 5: Add a new section on your homepage

Although Elli enjoys the overall layout of her website, she’s keen to make some changes to the design. Notably, she would like to include a brief introduction on the front of her page and display it over the photos gallery (which we’ll edit in the near future).

To accomplish this, you’ll need to hover over the area we’d like to include in this section. A new button called ‘Add Section’ will pop up – click it and click it.

This is the area where Squarespace’s strengths are at play. You’ll be able to pick from a myriad of pre-built templates, including headlines galleries, lists, and headlines, to more sophisticated features like email forms, Newsletter signups and appointment bookings that allow you to include the content of your choice.

We’d like to add some introduction text, So we’ll select some of the designs available in the “Text” section.

Are you not happy with the section you’ve added? Do not worry about it. All you have is just hover your mouse over the section and then click on the TRASH icon at the top of the screen.

If you’re content to keep it, click on the text and make changes as necessary to personalize it as personal to you. After you’re done, click the Save option by hovering your mouse over the word ‘Done at the top left corner of the editor.

Step 6 – Edit the existing ‘Projects’ section.

We are moving on to editing the next part of the page, the portfolio gallery photos (Squarespace refers to these as “Projects”).

We’d like to replace them with photos of Elli’s work, So let’s look over the section, then select the ‘Manage Projects’ button that appears.

You can also alter the appearance of this section. For instance, you might want to show three rows of pictures instead of two. Look over your section, click on the icon for a pencil (‘Edit Section’), and adjust it according to your needs.

On the Home Menu to the left side, you’ll find a list of all the active projects listed on the page. We’ll delete some of them since Elli has 4 projects she would like to show off. So, hover over one of the projects and click the”ellipsis” (‘…’) to show. Click ‘Delete.’

To add (rather than remove) additional projects, click the “+’ icon at the top of the pane.

To alter the images shown within this area, just hover over the appropriate project, click the ‘…’ icon, and select “Settings.”

In the new pop-up, you’ll see a new popup, select “Remove image,” and then replace it with your own. Be sure to alter the title and URL slug (the URL of the page) to make the image relevant to your website. Save the page in the upper left corner of the pop-up after you have finished.

Repeat this process for all one of your other tasks. When you’re finished, you can examine how the whole thing appears. If you’re pleased with the results, proceed to what’s next.

Squarespace’s templates depend on high-quality, high-resolution images for a smooth experience. Without them, the design begins to unravel. It’s worthwhile to put the extra effort (or money for stock images) to ensure that you have plenty of these images to use.

Step 7: Edit “Projects’ pages

Every image within your ‘Projects’ section has its page and a separate page. It is possible to include details regarding your work or add additional images. To modify this page, click on the project’s name in the Home Menu on the left, then click ‘Edit.’

To begin, you must modify the header background image using a hover-over section, then click the pencil icon (‘Edit Section’). In the popup window, choose the Background option, then click “Replace.”

You can edit the remainder on the site by clicking edit or creating sections as we’ve previously done.

To erase a portion, you need to hover over it and then click the trash icon at the top of the screen.

After you’ve finished, When you are done, click ‘Done’ and then ‘Save’ at the upper left corner, and continue with the other Projects’ pages.

Step 8 Edit the ‘Contact Page

We’re pleased with our website’s homepage and “Projects” section, so we’ll move to make another edit. The template we’ve chosen has a Contact page, which we’d like to keep to ensure potential clients can connect with Elli. To modify that page, you need to click on the ‘Pages’ button at the top left of the Home Menu.

Click on the Contact page (highlighted below). The Contact page will appear within the Site Preview on the right, and you can click Edit to modify the page.

In the beginning, we’ll substitute the image of Elli with a picture of Elli. To give it a design appeal, we’ll also need to alter the image format to allow a text box to overlap the image. To do this, simply select the image and then click on select the pencil to edit the image. After you have replaced the image, choose the tab ‘Design and select the option ‘Collage.

Enter the text field to modify the text. You can also differ the font size by choosing the text in the highlighted area and the type of text you want to change (e.g., Heading 1, 2 etc.).

When you’re done, you’ll have something similar to this:

Then, we’ll modify the text already there, identical to what we’ve done in earlier steps using the click and edit buttons. It is also possible to alter text formatting (e.g., bold or italic style) through the toolbar displayed over the text.

We’re also looking to replace the “Let’s work together” button with a new email form. You can delete it by clicking on it and then pressing trash.

In the next step, we’ll add a separate brand area (as we did in the previous step). Move your cursor over where you’d like to put your form (in our instance, it’s at the lower part of the screen). Select ‘Add section. Select the “Form” option. You’ll be presented with various layouts you can choose from. We’ll scroll to the bottom and select one that will display an image beside the form.

Once the form is in place, edit the image (you’ll be able to do this already! ). Edit the text that appears above the state, if needed.

To alter the fields on the form, select the state, then choose an edit icon using the pencil. Edit or remove areas already in use, or add new fields.

In the next step, you’ll need to determine where the data from the forms submitted will go. Select the Storage tab, and you’ll be able to select to receive them as email updates or to allow the information to be sent directly to the Google Drive spreadsheet, Mailchimp or any other marketing tool for email (using Zapier). In our instance, we’ll be deciding on to receive emails.

After you’ve completed the process after that, click the “Apply” button. Make sure that everything on your website is looking good. If you’re pleased with it, let’s proceed to the next step, adding blogs.

Step 9: adding blogs

You’ve already seen how to edit pages within the Squarespace templates. But what occurs if you want to add a brand new page? Perhaps a set of pages (for instance, a blog)?

It’s much easier than you believe. Within your Home Menu on your left side, ensure that you’re in the Main Navigation menu (if you’re not yet there and want to access it, do so by clicking on Pages). Use the “+’ link which appears next to “Main Navigation’ (or, if you don’t wish for this new page to be accessible via the main navigation of your website, then click on the “+” button that is next to ‘Not linked’).

Though you’ll likely want all pages to be linked via the main navigation, scenarios, where you might need to select the option to not link, include protected pages with passwords, areas for members only and landing pages that are ad-driven in general, anything you don’t want a regular visitor to visit.

There are many options to add pages, including the possibility of adding an empty page or beginning by creating a layout/template. The one we’ll select is the Blog option.

Then, choose the layout of your blog you wish to apply (we’ll select “Blog 2′):

After it’s added, you can alter the menu title of your blog’s left pane. The title will be the one that will appear in your website’s menu or the main navigation. To keep it short and straightforward, We’ll simply the blog’s name as ‘Blog.’

After that, select the menu item ‘Blog’ you just edited, and you’ll be directed to a list of blog posts demo that comes included in the design.

The blog posts can be edited the same way you did before editing your “Projects.” Click the ‘…’ link on the right of each blog’s title to erase or replace the article.

Similar to that, click ‘…’ and select “Settings” to:

  • Modify the state of the article (e.g., Draft’, Needs Review”, ‘Publish’ or even ‘Schedule’ the post)
  • Include tags and categories
  • Commenting can be disabled or enabled.
  • Change the main image on your blog (under the menu ‘Options’ item)
  • Modify SEO options (title description, URL and title)
  • Include hyperlinks to social media sites or send out email campaigns.

To modify the content of blog posts, click on the blog’s name on the left side, and then click edit within the Editor section.

Like the ‘Project’ pages, you’ll be able to edit headings already in place, texts, images, and even add or remove sections.

After that, you’ll have your blog’s main page, which may look that way – cool, isn’t it?

Step10 – Personalize your website styles

We’ve managed the content on the website. Now, let’s ensure that the style and design are exactly how we’d like it.

Templates on Squarespace are unified throughout the website. Each page has the same style of site and colors, fonts, color scheme and more. This is a great way to ensure that Squarespace sites keep the high-design style they’re known for.

You can make minor adjustments to the templates using the following steps. You should not go too far from the initial template. However, you could inject some of your company’s style into the design.

There is the option to include customized codes (HTML, CSS and Javascript) to make more significant modifications. I don’t recommend this since an) the templates of Squarespace are excellent for what they are as is, and) Squarespace won’t provide support regarding these changes. However, you have the option.

To begin, select the Home option within the lower left-hand pane. You will be able to navigate to the Home Menu. Select the ‘Design’ option. There are various options to personalize your website – fonts, animations, color buttons, and many more.

Customizing fonts

Start by clicking “Fonts.” Squarespace uses font packs and combinations of fonts that have been compatible with the template you have chosen. It is possible to switch collections of fonts, change the fonts in packs, and alter the Height or weight and spacing. Select the font that is best for your website by clicking the switch option.

We’ll select the font pack ITC Avant Garde Gothic Pro’. You can click it to preview how it will appear in the editor to the left (all headings and texts will automatically be updated with the latest Font Pack).

To adjust the fonts in your pack (e.g., font sizes, heights, spacing, etc.), click “Back” and then select one of the “Global Text Styles” options, as shown below. Below, you’ll see the “Assign Styles option that lets you define the location where each text style will be applied to your website.

Colors that can be customized

Perhaps your company’s logo includes colors you’d like to reflect on your website’s design. Maybe you prefer bright and bold colors to the template’s simple color scheme. If that’s the scenario, you can change the design of your site by going back to the menu ‘Design’ in the left pane and then selecting the option for ‘Colors.

Then, select “Edit,” which appears over your color scheme. You can choose any or more of Squarespace’s available color palettes. To pick custom colors or to choose the colors of an image uploaded, select the arrow or chevron symbol (highlighted beneath).

To apply this colour scheme to your website to apply these colors, simply click the chevron in the section next to the section titled ‘Section Themes’

There is a list of themes created by the automaker that you can apply to your website (these can change the background text, link, button colors, etc.). You can keep them as is or modify them by clicking the pencil icon whenever you hover your mouse over the theme.

Within the Site Preview window on the right side, you’ll be able to notice the color themes that have been that are applied to every section of the page that you’re looking at. As you can see, we’re using the theme ‘White Minimal’ across the homepage.

The color themes can be modified on a segment-by-section basis. The header will be inherited by the color theme used in the first section of the page. However, it is possible to change the theme by choosing “Edit header” > Colors > and then turning on the switch to ‘Transparent. The color themes applied to the footer are used across the entire website.

To change the settings, click Edit within the Preview of your Site. Next, hover over the area you wish to edit, and click an icon for pencil. Afterward, in the pop-up window, select the tab for ‘Colors’ and select your desired theme (we’re choosing “Accent Dark” for the topmost section).

Visit other pages on your website and then go back in case there are additional modifications:

When you’re done when you’re finished, click ‘Done’ at the top lefthand corner, then click ‘Save the changes.

Of course, there are many other design elements that you could alter, including buttons or spacing and more. But I’m sure you’re pretty familiar with the interface in the past, and if you’re interested in making some more changes, please feel free to test it yourself.

Step 11 – Update the page title as well as the navigation menu. SEO settings

We’re so close to the end of the road! Let’s take care of the housekeeping tasks first.

The first step is to seriously ensure that every page:

  1. The program displays pages in the sequence we want to show in the navigation menu.
  2. Utilizes titles that represent the page.
  3. Have the correct SEO setting.

A. Within the Home Menu, select Pages. Under the Main Navigation menus, move the webpages in the order you want by dragging them out of order. Changes will show up on the Site Preview on the right.

B. If you have any titles, you would like to alter, This is also where you can do it. For instance, we would like to switch the identification of ‘Work’ to “Portfolio.” On the Home Menu to the left side, hover over the “Work” page, and click the settings or gear icon. It will appear.

Edit the ‘Page Title’ and the ‘Navigation Title’ (plus the URL slug should you wish), Then click Save in the upper left.

C. This is an ideal time to change your settings for SEO to each of your pages, for instance, if you want to rank for particular phrases on Google. Also, press the settings/gear icon on the page you wish to change, and then go to the menu called ‘SEO. Edit ‘SEO Title’ and ‘SEO Description,’ then hit ‘Save.’ I suggest doing this on each page and your portfolio and blog posts.

Let’s check that you have your website set up correctly. On your Home menu, go to Settings and select ‘Language and Regions.’

Also, make sure that you’ve chosen the correct timezone, region, and measurement standards (this is important when you’re selling goods). After that, click ‘Save.

In the ‘Settings’ menu, click on the option “Business Information ” and enter the relevant information. Based on the template you choose, certain of these details might be automatically inserted into your website. Once again, click ‘Save’ when you are done.

Step 12: Final Check the domain, set it up, and launch!

  • The built-in domain is an auto-generated domain assigned to you from Squarespace (thatyou can change). It shall look something like this: yoursiteid.squarespace.com. This isn’t a replacement for your domain. Instead, consider it an internal domain only you have access to.
